John Smith wakes up staring up at the ceiling, his eyes are
only slightly open but are visibly bloodshot and his eyes have bags, he looks
dead. He looks motionlessly at the ceiling for a couple of seconds then diverts
his eyes to his phone which is on the floor next to his bed. He slowly gets up
and turns on the phone to show the time, 7:00AM. He looks blankly at the phones
screen squinting his eyes due to the brightness of the screen, he throws the phone
on the bed and stands up and slowly walks out of the room treading over all of
the mess. He enters the bathroom and looks at himself in the mirror, he notices
how bloodshot his eyes are and pulls his eyelid down and looks closely at his
eye in the mirror. He turns around and walks towards the shower, he turns on
the tap and enters the shower. The hot water hits his face as he stands
motionlessly in the shower, he steps out of the shower right foot first on to
the towel and his left foot follows, he stares at himself in the now steamed up
mirror. He leaves the bathroom and
enters the bedroom once again and begins to get dressed. He does the top button
on his shirt and correctly does his tie in a neat fashion. He picks up his
briefcase and his phone. He goes to the kitchen. The sink is full of dirty
plates and cups. He puts two pieces of bread in the toaster. He boils the
kettle and gets a mug out of the cupboard. He pours coffee in to the mug and
waits for the water to boil. Behind John the toaster starts to smoke, John
pours the boiled water in to the mug. He turns around, mug in hand. “Shit”. He
rushes to the toaster and quickly pulls out the two black burnt pieces of
toast. He stands at the counter eating his burnt toast and his black coffee,
straight faced and looking directly forward. John checks his phone, 7:44AM.
John places the plate and mug in the sink and exits the kitchen. He walks to
the front door and puts on his shoes and opens the front door. He checks his
phone one final time, 7:45AM.
John walks down
the street gripping his brifecase, he checks his phone, 7:55AM. He starts to
walk faster. John continues to walk down the streets turning at the end of each
street. John enters the train station and buys a ticket from the machine. John
stands blankly forward at the edge of the platform. The train arrives and John
gets on the train. John sits in silence on the train for the whole journey just
staring blankly at the seat in front of him. He gets of the train and leaves
the station. John checks his phone as he leaves the station, 8:20AM. John
enters the building, the receptionist looks up at John, “Hi, John. How was your
weekend?”. John stops walking, looks at the receptionist and replies, “it was
alright, thanks for asking”. John walks up the stairs and enters the office. He
walks past a few other workers who are talking about what they did on the
weekend. They look at John as he passes and stop talking. John sits down at his
desk and turns on his computer. He stares at the windows logo blankly as the computer
slowly turns on, he looks at himself in the reflection of the screen as it
turns black for a few seconds. He starts to do his work. Time passes as John
gets on with his work, his eyes stare blankly at the screen without blinking,
11:00AM. John continues typing away, 13:24AM. A man walks up behind John with a
stack of papers in his hands, he drops the work on John’s desk. John stops
typing and looks up at the man, it is his boss. The two men stare at each other
for a few seconds until his boss turns around and walks away. John looks at the
work that has been left at his desk, he frowns and drops his head to the desk.
John looks at the
time on the monitor of his screen, 5:57AM. He turns off the computer and picks
up his briefcase and walks out of the office. He walks past the receptionist,
he doesn’t hear what she says and walks out of the building whilst only walking
straight and without blinking. John walks to the train station and boards the
train.
Day 5
John opens his eyes slowly, he stares blankly
for a few seconds, his eyes are extremely bloodshot. He
starts the cycle again but is much slower,
he stands up and starts to pick up the clothes from the
previous day and put them back on. He goes
to the mirror and looks at himself like usual, he looks
disgusted at what is looking back at him.
Bloodshot eyes, large dark circles around eyes, messy facial
hair and messy hair. He looks at the time
on his phone and leaves his home. John walks the usual
route to the local train station (passes
the same houses, shops etc). John reaches the train station as
usual and goes to buy his ticket at the
machine. He types out the first few letters of the train station
next to his work, he clicks one adult
ticket and goes to click buy but before his finger hits buy he
takes a long pause. He takes his hand away
from the machine but then brings it back and buys the
ticket. He walks to the correct platform
and waits for the train. His feet are past the yellow lines at
the edge of the platform, he stares
blankly straightforward till the train comes. The train blocks the
view of John, people get off the train and
everyone who was waiting at the platform board the train.
The train then starts up and starts to
move, one person is left at the platform, John. He stands frozen
for a few seconds but then he turns and
walks to the other side of the platform leaving his briefcase
and gets on a different train. John sits
down on the train and stares out of the window; the urban
areas start to disappear and are replaced
with more scenic views of endless green fields. The train
passes multiple stations until John gets
up and exits the train, the train station is deserted with not a
single trace of human existence around
apart from John. He leaves the station and looks in both
directions before deciding which way to
walk. As he walks, his phone starts to ring, he looks at the
screen and sees it is his boss. He
declines the call and then turns his phone off. He leaves the
pavement and starts to walk up a hill. He
continues to walk up the hill until he suddenly stops turns
and looks around at the places around him.
He sits on the grass, takes of his jacket and puts it on the
grass behind him and lays his head on it.
He smiles and closes his eyes. Everything starts to fade to
black which is then disrupted by the noise
of john’s alarm. John wakes up and stares at his ceiling for
a few seconds and then picks up his phone
and looks at the time. The screen shows the day,
Monday. John throws the phone and lays
back in bed staring blankly at the ceiling.
